JUNE 16--Lumileds Lighting (San Jose, CA; www.lumileds.com) Luxeon LED array product for LCD backlights has received the Display Material/Component of the Year Silver Award in the 2004 SID/Information Display competition. The array, consisting of red, green, and blue side-emitting Luxeon LEDs, is the first to enable LED-based backlight illumination systems that provide improved color fidelity and other benefits over cold cathode fluorescent lamps. "The use of high-power LEDs in backlights offers significant advantages ranging from never-before-possible color reproduction to dynamic color-point control and mercury-free operation," said Mark Pugh, Lumileds vice president of business development.

Advances include a perpendicular LED beam pattern that makes the light produced by the red, green, and blue emitters readily available for mixing to create the white light consistent over time and temperature, necessary for backlight use and consistent brightness and color uniformity achieved through exclusive intelligent binning.

The awards recognize major advances in the design and manufacture of displays used in television sets, notebook computers, desktop computer monitors, cell phones, PDAs, DVD players, and other electronic devices.
