DECEMBER 7--In the second Webcast from Vision Systems Design (www.vision-systems.com), Robert Tait, a machine-vision expert at the GE Global Research Center (Niskayuna, NY, USA; www.ctd.ge.com), showed how different types and configurations of lighting can affect the imaging process. In a series of examples that include engine assembly casings and fan turbine blades, Tait showed examples of how specific types of lighting have been used to increase contrast in such applications.

"The single most important design parameter in developing a machine-vision system is the correct lighting," says Tait. "Misconceptions and misinformation about machine-vision lighting have proved fatal in many applications." Now, at vsd.pennnet.com/webcast/display_webcast.cfm?id=149, Robert Tait takes aim at lighting design and identifies the parameters that every system integrator must look for when deciding which type of lighting to use for a specific machine-vision application.

    Other Webcasts
"Lighting Lies and Lessons," is the second of Vision Systems Design's on-going Webcasts. The first, "Camera Chaos," presented by Scott Israel, president and founder of 1st Vision (Andover, MA, USA; www.1st-vision.com), a distributor of machine-vision products, can be viewed at vsd.pennnet.com/webcast/list_webcasts.cfm. It showed how engineers and integrators faced with the challenge of installing machine-vision systems must bring speed and efficiency to their applications while reducing costs. In his presentation, Scott explained which camera technology is best--FireWire, USB 2.0, Gigabit Ethernet, or Camera Link--for any particular application.

"In developing our Webcasts for Vision Systems Design, we realize that our readers require in-depth technical information and product examples," says Conard Holton, editor in chief of Vision Systems Design. "In Lighting Lies and Lessons, Robert Tait presents just that--an unbiased, objective look at lighting and lighting techniques, and real-world examples of how they can be used."

Readers wishing to view the webcasts and post a question to the presenters are welcome to do so. Simply post your questions regarding camera technology or lighting to our Question and Answer feedback forum at vsd.pennnet.com/forum/display_messages.cfm?CategoryID=94&TopicID=&SiteIDs=VSD .
