OCTOBER 15--Image 1 camera systems now come equipped with a serial digital interface (SDI) for rapid, convenient transmission of digital video, according to Karl Storz Endoscopy-America Inc. (Culver City, CA; www.karlstorz.com), an affiliate of Karl Storz GmbH & Co. KG and a leader in medical video imaging. Image 1 utilizes digital-source-sampling (DSS) technology and instantly converts optical images to digital at the CCD sensing chip. The new SDI interface ensures that Image 1 is fully compatible with the widest range of current and future digital video devices.

Digital at the source with more than ten patents pending, Image 1 delivers pure digital imaging that realistically renders the patient anatomy for the cleanest, sharpest images. DSS has the added benefit of minimizing image artifacts while reducing environmental influences such as that from an electrosurgical generator.

One advantage of SDI in the fully integrated operating room is that it allows the use of longer cable lengths, sometimes in excess of 300 meters, without the use of repeaters.

Image 1 comes ready for use with the Karl Storz Communication Bus (SCB), which integrates camera system functions with every aspect of the OR operation. Working through the Karl Storz SCB interface, surgical staff can establish, maintain, and modify performance parameters for any medical device manufactured by Karl Storz.
