APRIL 10--Optrex America (Plymouth, MI; www.optrex.com) has introduced a 5-in.-diagonal analog TFT (thin-film-transistor) liquid-crystal display (LCD) with integrated NTSC decoder module and backlight with inverter that can be designed into security/monitoring/surveillance systems, car television screens, portable DVD players, and global positioning systems. The module reduces or eliminates any external interfacing required on the part of the designer, providing an easy-to-use "plug-and-play" solution.

The Model T-51380L050J-FW-P-AB is a transmissive LCD that provides high luminance (320 nits), a 960 x 234 dot pixel display format, an active display area of 102.6 mm (horizontal) x 73.9 mm (vertical), and a dot pitch of 0.107 mm (horizontal) x 0.319 mm (vertical). The module provides an integrated NTSC decoder and backlight with inverter, as well as a composite video input pin and inputs for component RGB and QVGA. User interface features are available as value-added options, according to Optrex.

"This TFT module allows designers to easily plug a thin, flat, lightweight LCD into applications where big, bulky CRTs have been traditionally used," said John Cramer, marketing and business development manager at Optrex America. It permits adjustment of color, luminance, and contrast--either on back of the display or externally through a user-interface controller--so that the user can control picture quality.

The T-51380L050J-FW-P-AB weighs only 230 grams, is durable, and provides a wide operating temperature range (-10°C to +60°C). Viewing direction is 6 o'clock, and the module features left/right image reversion. It is backlit by a single cold cathode fluorescent lamp and consumes 6.0 W of power. It features an antiglare polarizer, and it is available assembled with dc-dc converter/dc-ac inverter.
