MAY 22--Eastman Kodak Company (Rochester, NY; www.kodak.com/go/display) has announced the availability of evaluation kits for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays. Reportedly the first evaluation kit of its kind, the Kodak display AM550L will give manufacturers their first opportunity to design a new generation of devices that take advantage of active-matrix OLED's bright, crisp image quality, unlimited viewing angle, thin profile, and low power consumption. The kit includes an AM500L panel, an interface board, software drivers, cables and instructions for use.

The kit includes the Kodak AM550L, a landscape-oriented, 5.48-cm (2.16-inch) diagonal, full-color active-matrix OLED panel. These displays are being premiered this week at the Society for Information Display trade show in Boston. "The kit represents the latest development in our drive to incorporate image displays of the highest quality into consumer and professional electronics," said Leslie Polgar, president, display products, Eastman Kodak Company.

Because OLED displays consist of self-luminous pixels that do not require backlights used in liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), OLED technology offers design and performance advantages including clearer images and crisper video, as well as thinner designs in devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones and PDAs. The market for OLED displays is expected to range from $900 million to $3.6 billion by 2005, according to Stanford Resources and DisplaySearch.
