New technology enables high-resolution digital still and video imaging at low cost

(PVS; Homer, NY; www.photon-vision.com) has announced its Imaging Solutions on Silicon (ISoS) technology platform, which enables the next generation of consumer digital-imaging applications including multimode digital cameras (still and video), HDTV, digital cinematography, document scanners, multifunction peripherals, digital copiers, fax, and many others. Along with improving the quality, clarity, and speed of a digital imaging with its proven Active Column Sensor and PVS-Bus technologies, PVS has now set its sights on bringing life-like colors to digital imaging for the consumer and professional photographer.

As part of the ISoS platform, PVS has developed proprietary real-time algorithms to generate true-to-life color digital still pictures and video from the raw sensor data at real-time data rates at a very low cost. This proprietary technology includes unique image processing algorithms for color interpolation, color space conversion, pixel-defect correction, gamma correction, white balance, JPEG compression, and more. In addition, this is the first time that all of these functions are implemented in hardware that is all contained on a single low-cost chip with the image sensor.

The first products to roll out with the new technology platform are part of the new DaVinci Sensor Series product line, which will include affordable multimode 1.3-, 2.1-, and 3+-Mpixel chips designed for the digital still and video camera markets. Additionally, these devices are capable of digital video at resolutions exceeding 1.3 Mpixels without subsampling. PVS is working with the major US and Asian manufacturers to integrate these sensors into their next-generation products.
