JANUARY 21, 2009--The research department at DaimlerChrysler wanted a device for exact measurement of moving car wheels, establishing the wheel position accurately to within tenths of millimeters, to optimize wheel housings, shock absorbers, and ABS systems. Photogrammetric algorithms are used to evaluate a high-resolution video image in real time 500 times per second, with up to 250 positioning marks on the wheel and vehicle body.

Supercomputing Systems designed and developed the preprocessing computer using an FPGA (Virtex II Pro) and an Ethernet interface to a laptop. The high-performance camera, which supplies 500 images per second in HDTV resolution, is connected via a Camera Link interface. This means that 660 megapixels can be evaluated online.
