MAY 3--With the opening of Wuxi Unique SCHOTT Optical Co. Ltd., the Mainz, Germany-based technology company SCHOTT (www.schott.com) is strengthening its optics business in China. The new company officially opened for business on April 29 in the Wuxi National High Technology Development Zone, located about 100 miles northwest of Shanghai in the Jiangsu province.

The company manufactures optical glass blanks used in digital imaging and projection devices. A total of $8 million has been invested in the facility, which was constructed on approximately 30,000 square meters. The plant will employ 200 people by May, at which point mass production of optical-glass banks is scheduled to begin.

The central location within the country will give customers in and around China better and faster service through substantially reduced lead times. Customers within the Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou regions will especially profit from fast deliveries due to the good local infrastructure.

The strategic partnership combines the advantages of SCHOTT's advanced processing equipment and top quality raw glass with the operational expertise of Unique Optical Industrial Co. Ltd., which manufactures and trades various optical instruments, camera lenses, and similar products. Unique Optical is based in Taichung, Taiwan.
