OCTOBER 5, 2007--The European Machine Vision Association (EMVA; www.emva.org) has released its Standard 1288 for Measurement and Characterization of Image Sensors. The EMVA 1288 standard facilitates comparison of camera and image-sensor specifications and assessment of their performance. It contains an additional module for measurement and characterization of linearity and linearity errors.

The linearity module was added as an optional module, which the manufacturer can choose to include or not include in its published data. In contrast, module 1, comprising basic information, sensitivity, noise, and signal-to-noise-ratio related parameters is compulsory and has to be applied for all components characterized and published according to the standard. The introduction of compulsory and optional modules gives manufacturers wider freedom to optimize datasheets according to the application fields of their products, while the unified methodology and comparability of the specification parameters is maintained.

Martin Wäny, chair of the EMVA Standard working group 1288, will give a presentation, "Measurement and characterization according to the EMVA 1288 Standard," at the VISION Show, Stuttgart, on Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Further information is available at www.standard1288.org.

Founded in May 2003 in Barcelona, Spain, the European Machine Vision Association currently has close to 100 members representing 18 nations. Its aim is to promote the development and use of machine-vision technology and to support the interests of its members.
