Europe's Machine Vision Industry Steps into Growth

At VISION 2026, industry leaders highlight a 3% growth in Europe's machine vision market, driven by AI integration and technological advancements, signaling a positive shift after recent challenges.

Key Highlights

  • Europe's machine vision market is expected to grow by approximately 3% in 2026, indicating a recovery and positive market outlook.
  • AI is a dominant theme, enabling new deployment methods and prompting companies to develop custom solutions in-house.
  • Suppliers of cameras, sensors, and edge computing platforms are experiencing steady growth, while the systems segment is still recovering, especially in Germany.

With a keen focus on the intersection of machine vision, physical AI, and industrial automation, Vision Systems Design is attending VISION 2026 in Stuttgart, Germany. After participating in the VDMA Machine Vision press briefing and attending opening-day activities on Oct. 6, I'm sharing some of the trends shaping the market for machine vision engineers, integrators, and technology suppliers.

Market Returns to Growth

Anne Wendel, director of VDMA Machine Vision, opened the the show with an optimistic outlook. According to VDMA, Europe's machine vision market is expected to grow by about 3% this year, signaling a return to growth after recent market challenges. For engineers and integrators, the forecast offers a positive indicator that investment and demand may be stabilizing after a period of economic uncertainty.

A Reader's Question About AI and Integration

As I listened to the briefing and spoke with industry colleagues, I found myself thinking about a question submitted by a VSD reader in response to a recent survey:

"What I see, especially in Germany, is a shift among companies using cameras in their production lines. In the past, they contracted integrators who delivered full-function, closed products. This is changing with AI; many companies are now hiring data scientists to develop their own solutions. Is this trend worldwide? How does it change the machine vision supply chain? Will integrators become obsolete?"

While the VDMA briefing did not directly address the future role of integrators, AI emerged as one of the event's dominant themes. Nearly two-thirds of surveyed companies identified AI as a central part of their business strategy. The takeaway is clear: AI is not only enhancing established machine vision applications but also enabling new approaches to deployment and customization.

Where Do Integrators Fit?

The market data shared during the briefing reflects this shift. Suppliers of cameras, sensors, optics, and edge computing platforms reported growth of approximately 4% in 2025, with continued momentum expected. At the same time, the systems segment remains in recovery mode, particularly in Germany, where demand has lagged.

Whether these trends are connected remains an open question. As AI tools become more accessible, are manufacturers building more vision capabilities in-house? If so, how might that influence the traditional role of machine vision integrators and solution providers?

Those are questions worth exploring while I am here.

With approximately 500 exhibitors on the show floor, VISION 2026 provides a valuable opportunity to examine how machine vision technologies and business models are evolving. Over the next several days, I'll be asking these questions of exhibitors, technology providers, and industry experts in search of more concrete answers and insights for our VSD audience.
