Industrial robotics company receives major round of funding
GE Ventures, Caterpillar Ventures, and Microsoft Corporationwill all invest in Sarcos Robotics, a global developer of dexterous industrial robots that are designed for use in unstructured environments, including manufacturing, construction, oil and gas, mining, infrastructure inspection, logistics, public safety, and military.
In addition to these companies, Cottonwood Technology Fund and two other private investment firms, together with the Company's three co-founders, Ben Wolff, Dr. Fraser Smith and Dr. Marc Olivier, invested in the financing round.
Money raised from this investing round will be used to expand the Sarcos team and to accelerate the production and deployment of Sarcos’ Guardian line of robots, which is comprised of the following:
Guardian GT – Big Arm (pictured): A single or dual-armed, human-controlled robot mount on an agile tracked vehicle base. Each 7-foot arm has 7degrees of freedom, plus a task set-specific end effector, and can reach objects up to four feet in front of the mobile platform.
Guardian XO – An Iron Man-like exoskeleton suit built from a combination of structures, sensors, actuators, and controllers, and powered by high-pressure hydraulics. This suit enables its wearer to easily lift 200 lbs. several times without tiring, and repeatedly punch through three inches of wood, while also enabling the user to move with relative ease.
Ben Wolff, Sarcos Robotics Co-Founder, Chairman, and CEO, commented on the news: "With more than 8 million people injured or killed on the job each year in the U.S. alone, there is substantial demand for robots that can carry out challenging tasks that are too dangerous or difficult for humans. Our human-operated robots are designed to perform meaningful, highly dexterous work in real-world settings while keeping people out of harm's way. We are thrilled to collaborate with Caterpillar, GE, Microsoft and our other new investors to enhance the capabilities and relevance of our robots and to accelerate delivery of our robots to key industrial sectors."
