Alliance aims at flat-panel displays

Candescent Technologies Corp. (San Jose, CA) and Schott Corp. (Yonkers, NY) have agreed to jointly develop and supply flat-panel-display glass and glass-related technologies. For its part, Schott will establish high-volume glass processing in the United States as a supply arm for Candescent`s Thin-CRT fabrication line, as well as invest an equity stake in Candescent. Both companies are slated to jointly develop glass processing and finishing technologies to custom-build an economical glass material and supply channel for thin CRTs. In addition, Schott will have the primary management responsibility of building a final processing facility to be funded by both partners. In this way, the two companies will eliminate duplicate costs associated with cleaning and inspecting finished glass products. The first thin CRTs are expected to be delivered in 1998.
