efector PMD nominated for Hermes Award 2005
OCTOBER 20--The partnership between PMD Technologies (Siegen, Germany; www.pmdtec.com) and ifm electronic has resulted in the development of a distance-measurement system using PMD (photonic mixer device) technology. The "efector PMD" laser sensor measures distances with millimeter accuracy at ranges up to 10 m. The sensor has an on-chip time-of-flight measurement system, whereby the technology for signal detection and processing is fully integrated into a single chip.
Another advantage of PMD technology lies in the efficient suppression of background illumination, which filters out extraneous light, including sunlight, ensuring robust distance-measurement performance even under difficult environmental conditions. The physical dimensions are only 42 x 42 x 52 mm. The efector PMD sensor was created for use in positioning, level measurement, and autonomous industrial transport applications. Such applications include crash protection and positioning of automated industry conveyor trucks.
The innovation shown in the development of the efector PMD has resulted in its being nominated for the Hermes Award, awarded yearly at the Hannover Messe trade fair. The prize itself has a value of 100,000 euros and aims to reward technical quality and innovation, as well as business potential.
