MARCH 21--The surging development of the Chinese market is reflected in the success of electronicChina, an International Trade Fair for Components, Assemblies, Electronics Production, and Photonic Technologies with the PCIM China conference, which took place at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) from 12 to 14 March 2003. Following its première last year, electronicChina 2003 was held simultaneously with the SEMICON China Exhibition and Conference on the subject of semiconductor production. electronicChina with PCIM China and SEMICON China 2003 together became the country's largest event for electronic components, assemblies, and services.

At the show, 48% of the 260 exhibitors at electronicChina came from the People's Republic of China. The majority of the remaining 52% were from the USA and Japan, followed by Germany, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, each with their own pavilion. Exhibitors said they were pleased with the level of the contacts made. Gelja Marschner, marketing communications manager for electronic modules at Tyco Electronics, praised in particular the Asian presence: "We had many prospective customers on our stand, above all from PR China, SAR Hong Kong and Taiwan, and also Japan, Korea, and other Asian countries."

Wilfried L. Weber, R&D manager at Powersem, said. "Most of the people we talked to were Chinese, but a few trade visitors also came from Japan and Korea. Our taking part in this event will further advance our business activities in China." The trade fair went equally well for numerous first-time exhibitors such as Diotec of Heitersheim (Germany) and Eldre of Rochester (USA); both have already announced that they will be back next year for electronicChina 2004.

The show conference was attended by 450 visitors, more than twice as many as last year. As Christine Zieroth, sales and marketing director conferences & exhibitions for the organizer ZM Communications, summed it up, "The success of the PCIM China Conference and Exhibition has reinforced our decision to continue our commitment in China. We've already carried out strategic talks, so as to match what we offer even better to the needs of the Chinese market for power electronics."
