MAY 4, 2009--Within every manufacturing process it has become very important to detect any faulty parts involved in the assembly process as soon as possible to avoid losing any time with disassembly and thus keep productivity high. A joint project between three machine-vision companies has delivered an automatic inspection system capable of checking all incoming parts of one complex cast part at the start of the assembly process.

The inspection system consists of 3-D cameras from Photonfocus (Lachen, Switzerland) and 3-D Vision Factory software from ACT Smartware (Karsruhe, Germany). This software relies on specialized 3-D software libraries from Aqsense (Girona, Spain). The new inspection system has already cut disassembly times related to faults in the cast parts and increase productivity.
