NOVEMBER 21--The Industrial Systems Division of Metrologic Instruments Inc. (Blackwood, NJ; www.metrologic.com), headquartered at its subsidiary Adaptive Optics Associates Inc. (AOA), received a substantial order from a major airline to provide portable barcode-reading stations. AOA will be providing portable barcode-reading stations to support the transportation and tracking of US mail by the airline.

This application requires a system that can withstand a variety of harsh environmental conditions ranging from direct sunlight to night operations and from hot to very cold temperatures, enabling them to be used on airport tarmacs. AOA engineers worked to create a system that scans reliably under such harsh conditions. The result of these efforts is a unique portable scanning solution that is battery powered and climate controlled.

Tom Burke, AOA director of industrial sales, stated, "We were able to utilize our standard products, including our TECH Series scanners, which have a long and proven history with the US Postal Service, as well as our custom engineering skills. Add to that, the vision and support this customer provided and the result is a winning product that combines performance and reliability."

Metrologic designs, manufactures, and markets barcode-scanning and high-speed automated data-capture solutions using laser holographic and vision-based technologies.
