Incorrectly labeled infusion solutions are a major risk to the health of patients. Consequently, 5-digit solution numbers on seal caps are used to reliably track bottles with different medical infusion solutions during the manufacturing process. The character-recognition system VICODE, developed by Vitronic (Wiesbaden, Germany; www.vitronic.com), verifies the solution number on the upper side of the lid directly after laser engraving and immediately after filling. A second identification system verifies the solution number on the sterilized product before the bottles are labeled or packed.
