Flat-panel market growth to surge in 2002

JUNE 17--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX; www.displaysearch.com), a flat-panel-display (FPD) market-research and consulting firm, has released its 2002 FPD Producer Profile Report. Highlights from the data summary section include:
o TFT LCD revenues fell 13% in 2001 but are expected to rise by 67% in 2002 to $24.4 billion due to stronger demand and higher prices and fab utilization. The large-area (greater than 10 in.) share of TFT LCD revenues is expected to rise from 78% to 83%.
o Samsung remained the #1 TFT LCD supplier in 2001, despite an 18% decline to $2.45 billion and a 16.8% share. It is expected to remain the largest TFT LCD supplier on a revenue basis in 2002 on 48% growth to more than $3.6 billion.
o Taiwan is expected to overtake Korea in 2002 large-area shipments with a 39% to 36% advantage on 135% growth to 27.2 million units.
o Small/medium TFT LCD revenues are expected to rise at a 28% CAGR between 1998 and 2002 to $4.2 billion, led by Japanese suppliers with more than a 90% share.
o Notebook module revenues declined by 41% or $3.8 billion in 2001 as ASPs fell by more than 50% and units rose just 15%. Notebook module revenues will bounce back in 2002, rising 53% to $8.2 billion as prices and growth accelerate.
o The 15-in. notebook module market is enjoying rapid growth, rising at more than 120% per year from 1999 to 2002. Its 2002 share is expected to more than double to 30%.
o LCD monitor module revenues rose 23% in 2001 to $5.26 billion, nearly catching notebook module revenues at 46% vs. 47% of total large-area TFT LCD revenues. In 2002, LCD monitor module revenues are expected to account for the largest share of the large-area market at 54% on 109% growth to $11 billion.
o From 2001 to 2002, the number of TFT LCD suppliers expected to ship more than 50% of their output to the LCD monitor market is expected to rise to 9.
o Small/medium unit shipments are expected to rise at a 44% CAGR from 1998 to 2002, reaching 133 million units in 2002.
