FEBRUARY 8---Adept Technology (Livermore, CA, USA), a provider of intelligent vision-guided robotics and global robotics services, has been selected by a major prescription benefit management provider as the robotics supplier for its automated distribution center. The Adept Cobra i800 robots will be used as intelligent handlers in sorting and filling orders for prescription drugs destined for the expanding home-delivery market. The Adept Cobra i800 robot was selected for its speed, precision, and intelligence, providing fast and reliable order fulfillment along with complete process traceability. The fully embedded controls of the Adept Cobra i800 reduce floor space and streamline communications with factory order-management systems.

According to BCC Research, a market-research firm serving the health-care industry, the US pharmacy automation market will grow from $1.4 billion in 2003 to $2.5 billion by 2008. This growth will be driven in large part by the increasing portion or prescription drugs available for home delivery through mail-order pharmacies. It is estimated that 25% of all US prescriptions will be delivered directly to the home by 2011.
