Using four MPC7400 PowerPC microprocessors with AltiVec technology on a single daughtercard, each VME Merlin card includes four 333-MHz MPC7400 PowerPCs that can be configured with 1 Gbyte of on-board memory. Delivering 10.6 GFLOPS, system designers can incorporate up to four Merlin cards on a 9U VME board to provide 42 GFLOPS and 4 Gbytes of memory. With its four MPC7400 PowerPCs, the Merlin board uses the 320-Mbyte/s SkyChannel to connect to SkyBolt II 6U and 9U VME application accelerators and the HPC-1 computing system. Up to 256 VME boards can be connected in a single SkyChannel system, enabling up to 1024 Merlin daughtercards (with 4096 microprocessors) to operate in a distributed shared-memory architecture that provides performance approaching 11 TFLOPs. Prices begin at $25,000 in single-unit quantities.
