Software fixes depth of field A Windows-based image-processing package is designed to overcome the inadequate depth of field of optical microscopes when imaging large three-dimensional specimens. Software fixes depth of field A Windows-based image-processing package is designed to overcome the inadequate depth of field of optical microscopes when imaging large three-dimensional specimens. Because the depth of many objects exceeds the depth of field of the optical microscope, only part of an image is in sharp focus. Montage software combines the in-focus parts from a series of images focused at different heights on the specimen to form a perfectly focused composite. High-resolution color or monochrome images from the microscope can be captured for use with Montage using a PC framestore displayed on a VGA monitor and saved to disk.
