SEPTEMBER 8--Kontron America (Poway, CA;www.kontron.com), a leader in embedded computing technology and mobile rugged solutions, has announced that it has renamed its facility in Fremont, CA, to be officially known as Kontron America, Silicon Valley. The operations at the Silicon Valley facility also have been reorganized to ensure greater efficiencies and to make greater use of the synergies that exist. Under this plan, the Embedded Modules and Mobile Rugged groups will continue to function as separate business units, but will take advantage of the R&D capabilities and knowledge that both the two engineering teams have to offer. The joint efforts of these teams will ensure that the embedded computing technology and mobile rugged markets can expect to see more advancements coming from Kontron's Silicon Valley facility.

The Embedded Modules business unit is jointly responsible for the development of the ETX form factor for Computer-On-Modules (COMs) and most recently for the initiative that lead to the release of the COM Express COM.0 standard from the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG) upon which the Kontron ETXexpress product line is based. Other COMs created and supported by this business unit include the growing line of Kontron X-board modules that are based on x86 and RISC processors as well as Kontron DIMM-PC modules that represent the smallest COMs currently available to answer the needs of embedded applications.

The Mobile Rugged business unit is comprised of the former Dolch Computer Systems team that was purchased by Kontron in March of this year and the former Kontron Mobile Computing. This business unit is responsible for a complete line of rugged mobile computing systems, as well as rugged displays and workstations designed to meet the demands of customers serving a variety of industries and applications such as military, oil and gas, telecom, and other harsh environment situations.
