PerkinElmer makes management appointments

JULY 17--PerkinElmer Inc. (Boston, MA; www.perkinelmer.com) has made two appointments that further strengthen the company's management team and focus on health sciences.

JULY 17--PerkinElmer Inc. (Boston, MA; www.perkinelmer.com) has made two appointments that further strengthen the company's management team and focus on health sciences. Peter B. Coggins, a 30-year life-sciences industry expert, joins PerkinElmer as president of life sciences. He succeeds John J. Engel, who has been appointed executive vice president of operations. Both executives will report to Gregory L. Summe, chairman and chief executive officer.

Coggins most recently served as executive vice president, global sales and marketing, for Amersham Biosciences. He also held the position of chairman of the board for Amersham Japan KK and was a member of Amersham Biosciences executive committee. He holds a Ph.D. in zoology from Chelsea College, University of London.

Engel moves to a newly created role aimed at growing the company's services business and driving companywide operational initiatives in productivity and quality. He has served as executive vice president and president of life sciences, where he led the successful Packard BioScience integration, and previously was president of the company's optoelectronics business. He joined PerkinElmer in 1999 after serving in senior roles at Allied Signal and General Electric.
