JANUARY 6--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX), a leader in FPD market research and consulting, identified in itsQ4'02 Quarterly LCD TV Shipment and Forecast Report that LCD TV demand is expected to explode in 2003. Despite continued weakness in the worldwide electronics industry, demand for LCD TVs surged by 113% in 2002. Through improved availability of larger panel sizes and a wealth of new LCD TV technological advances, DisplaySearch is highly optimistic about 2003 growth prospects for the LCD TV market, with 182% growth projected for 2003 and more than 100% growth expected in 2004.

Optimism about LCD TVs is based on numerous factors, including larger substrate fabs in which larger-sized panels will be better optimized and more cost-effective, lower panel and set prices, added competition, the rapid emergence of HDTV, and improvements in numerous enabling technologies.

LCD TV shipments in Q3'02 were up 123% Y/Y and 24% Q/Q to 338 K LCD TV sets. Despite continuing weakness in the worldwide economic situation, which affected region-leading Japan particularly severely, record volumes of LCD TVs were shipped in Q3'02.

LCD TV ASPs dropped by 10% in Q3'02 vs. Q2'02 to $1224. The ratio between panel and TV prices decreased from 4.0X to 3.7X, still a substantial channel markup, providing new entrants to the market an opportunity to employ price-based penetration strategies.
