JUNE 18--Viisage Technology Inc. (Littleton, MA; www.viisage.com), a provider of identity-verification technology, has won a $4.1 million contract with the US Department of Defense (DOD) to continue development of facial-recognition solutions based on Viisage technology for use by government agencies. According to the company, the DoD Technical Support Working Group (TSWG) has been working with Viisage technology in product development since 1998.

The new contract has a value of more than $2.5 million in the first year, with two additional one-year options making up the balance of the $4.1 million. The TSWG plans to continue developing Viisage-based solutions for the government to use in the areas of security, intelligence, and antiterrorism efforts.

"This contract builds on our previous successes working with the TSWG and speaks directly to the importance of designing facial-recognition applications specifically tailored to assist in the war on terror," said Viisage president and CEO Bernard Bailey.

Viisage's work with the TSWG has included applications for access control, surveillance, and large-database searching for various federal, military, and intelligence agencies. The new contract will also afford the TSWG the opportunity to exploit the combined facial-recognition technology solutions of Viisage and ZN Vision Technologies AG (Bochum, Germany; www.zn-ag.com), a European provider of facial-recognition solutions. Viisage expects to complete its acquisition of ZN in Q3-03.
