OCTOBER 9--Color Kinetics Incorporated (Boston, MA;www.colorkinetics.com), the pioneer of intelligent LED-based illumination technologies, has been awarded a US patent covering the application of LED illumination for machine-vision systems. The newly issued patent will form the basis for potential business relationships with machine-vision system manufacturers who recognize the value of complete digital illumination control.

US pat. #6,624,597 is a utility patent called "Systems and Methods for Providing Illumination in Machine Vision Systems." Machine vision refers to technology that enables automated vision inspection for streamlined manufacturing processes. Controlling the lighting conditions in machine-vision systems is vital to their function, and this patent covers technology that will allow the systems to control and direct the lighting. The technology will find applications in both monochrome or color vision systems.

Color Kinetics Incorporated designs, manufactures, and markets a line of products that apply the practical and aesthetic benefits of LEDs to transcend the limits of traditional light sources for use in professional, consumer, and OEM and licensing applications. Its flagship line of technologies leverage a patented layer of digital intelligence, called Chromacore, to generate and control millions of colors and dynamic lighting effects.
