PhotoDetection Systems Inc., a launch company of the Boston University Photonics Center and the private venture firm Marenghi & Co., is developing advanced medical imaging systems for detecting and staging cancer, characterizing the severity of cardiac emergencies, and diagnosing brain disorders. The company has also developed a sensitive gamma camera for positron emission tomography, a three-dimensional imaging system that can detect cancer abnormalities as small as 1 to 2 mm in diameter and for distinguishing benign from malignant tissues.
