LCD monitor shipments rise

MARCH 28--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX) reveals in its latest Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report that worldwide LCD monitor shipments rose 30% Q/Q and 54% Y/Y to a record-high 9.9 million units, ahead of suppliers' aggregate 29% forecast.

MARCH 28--DisplaySearch (Austin, TX), an FPD market-research and consulting company, reveals in its latest Quarterly Desktop Monitor Shipment and Forecast Report that worldwide LCD monitor shipments rose 30% Q/Q and 54% Y/Y to a record-high 9.9 million units, ahead of suppliers' aggregate 29% forecast. CRT monitor shipments rose 5% Q/Q and were down 4% Y/Y to 22.4 million units. With overall desktop monitor shipments rising 12% Q/Q and 9% Y/Y, LCD monitor penetration reached 30% in Q4'02, up from 26% in Q3'02 and 22% one year ago. For all of 2002, LCD monitors rose 105% to 32.2 million units with LCD PCs up 112% to 1.2 million units and CRT monitors were down 2% to 83.6 million units.

The total desktop-monitor market rose 15% to 117 million units in 2002. Desktop monitor revenues rose 9% in 2002 to $36 billion, led by LCD monitors up 55%, with CRT monitors down 15% and LCD PCs up 64%.

Driving the Q4'02 growth was strong seasonal demand, stand-alone CRT monitor replacement demand and lower prices. Average LCD monitor prices fell 9%, with larger than 15-in. LCD monitors falling between 11% and 30%, depending on the size and resolution. Average CRT monitor prices fell 5%.
