MAY 12--The UKIVA (UK Industrial Vision
Association, Herts, UK; www.ukiva.org)
has two new members--Cedip Infrared Systems joins as a full member, while the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Sheffield University, joins as a research member. Cedip Infrared Systems designs and manufactures infrared cameras and systems for both commercial and defense and security applications. The products cover the entire infrared spectrum, with systems designed for turnkey applications. Applications include NDT, online thermal imaging and process control, stress analysis and mechanical testing, infrared thermography, and infrared signatures as well as R&D
applications.

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Sheffield University, headed by professor Nigel Allinson, undertakes a range of image engineering activities from imaging devices and systems to pattern-recognition and image understanding. The department leads the £4.5m Basic Technology consortium, Multidimensional Integrated Intelligent Imaging (MI-3), on the development of active pixel sensors for a range of scientific and medical applications. Under development are a system for the efficient and secure compression of crime scene marks, notably fingerprint lifts, as well as a footwear-impression identification system that will be used nationally in all custody suites and for forensic work.

UKIVA director Don Braggins commented: "Naturally we are always delighted to welcome new members and both fit in well with our recent observations of the imaging marketplace. There has been a growing
interest in the use of nonvisible wavelength imaging in the past few years, such as infrared and x-ray. In addition, research institutions are not only developing solutions that have real commercial applications, but are enabling them to get to market."
