JANUARY 17--Edmund Industrial Optics (EO; Barrington, NJ, USA; www.edmundoptics.com) is making new investments to expand its manufacturing and customer support presence in Japan and the Asian markets. The company has had a presence in Japan since 1946. It has purchased a substantial stake in Saito Optics of Akita, Japan, with which it has had a long history of collaboration, with Saito supplying EO with high-precision spherical optics. The two companies have also collaborated in jointly developed manufacturing technologies.

EO management is now directing the Saito plant and has plans to make significant improvements in the technology, equipment, and staffing during 2007. CEO Robert Edmund noted, "This aggressive investment in Japanese optical manufacturing supports EO's commitment to Japanese customers, in addition to expanding capabilities for EO's global customer base."

EO supplies a full line of optics and optical products to Japan and the Asian markets, including lasers, optical instruments, laboratory and production accessories, coating services, and testing. In addition to the Saito plant, EO has manufacturing facilities in Japan, Singapore, and China.
