OCTOBER 9--Viisage Technology Inc. (Littleton, MA; www.viisage.com) has been awarded a $2.4 million contract amendment to expand and enhance the company's project with the Pinellas County, FL, Sheriff's Office. Under the new contract amendment, Viisage will focus on statewide expansion of its FaceEXPLORER and PICS systems, as well as providing facial recognition in a mobile setting. The funding for the project is provided by the US Department of Justice, with strong support from Congressman Bill Young, who represents Central Florida.
Viisage will expand the current project to include additional agencies within the state of Florida and up to 2 million additional mugshot-database images. The system is designed to help law-enforcement officials identify known and suspected criminals by providing investigators with booking history information and rapid facial-recognition search capability.
In addition, Viisage will also focus on the integration of face-recognition and image-retrieval technology onto laptops and hand-held mobile devices to aid Pinellas Sheriffs' deputies. This important application will take Viisage's identification technology to the officer in the field, which will aid in investigations and ensuring deputy safety.
