In this Google Hangout video chat, Gatekeeper Security co-founder and CEO Christopher Millar talks with web editor Jimmy Carroll to discuss the importance of vision as it pertains to intelligent transportation systems. Millar was our expert presenter on a live webcast on this topic that took place on July 22.

For more than 10 years, Gatekeeper Security has developed and manufactured intelligent vision security systems for vehicle inspection, license plate reading, carriage vehicle inspection, and other vehicles on road or rail. Gatekeeper’s system builds "digital fingerprints" of vehicles and can search through a database to automatically identify any change that has been made to a vehicle.

In the video, Millar provides an example of a recent vision system project that, according to him, really showcases the capability of ITS technology. For this particular application, Millar explains that Gatekeeper built a "train portal" scanning system that is capable of 360° imaging on all four sides of a train.

In this system, which is currently going through the review process with a client, all four sides of the moving train are scanned and a model is built. This model is then compared with previous scans in order to determine whether any changes have been made. A train portal imaging system is set up every mile on the track and as the portal captures images of the train, those images are passed from one portal to the next, to continuously monitor for potential changes.

In addition, Millar discusses the role and importance of vision to the intelligent transportation systems industry and how it can be used to prevent crimes such as drug smuggling across borders. He also talks about increasing demand and improving technologies related to vision-based security and inspection systems.

Millar brings his knowledge of intelligent transportation systems to Vision Systems Design's webcast entitled "Choosing components for intelligent transportation systems." During the free webcast, Millar will discuss the vision-related technologies involved in ITS systems, as well as the various components that Gatekeeper uses to successfully and efficiently inspect moving vehicles.

The webcast—which is sponsored by Cognex Corporation, Point Grey, Pleora Technologies, and Teledyne DALSA was presented live at 11 AM ET on July 22, 2014.
