Total machine vision sales in North America saw a 10% year-over-year jump in the first quarter of 2013, says the Automated Imaging Association (AIA).

In addition, sales of machine vision systems rose 11% year-over-year, while the sales of machine vision components, software and imaging boards all posted single digit growth. Industry experts are confident, however, that the market for machine vision components will continue to improve, according to Alex Shikany, AIA Director of Market Analysis. Shikany says that “70% of machine vision experts believe machine vision component sales will increase in the next six months.”

A previous forecast from the AIA, which showed that sales of machine vision components and systems fell in 2012, but are expected to rebound in 2013, was validated with this report. The year-over-year growth could potentially be attributed to the fact that industry need for machine vision still exists across a number of industries, as sales of application-specific machine vision (ASMV) or turnkey systems saw 12% growth in Q1.
