OCTOBER 26--Cognex Corp. (Natick, MA; www.cognex.com), supplier of machine-vision systems, announced that Norske Skog, a supplier of newsprint, has integrated two Cognex SmartView ICN web-inspection systems at its Saugbrugs mill in Halden, Norway. The Cognex SmartView systems will be used on the Norske Skog manufacturing line to check products for defects such as holes, dirt particles, contaminants, and edge cracks. The Cognex machine-vision systems will be installed on parallel super-calender machines, which apply a gloss coating to the paper.

"Cognex's automated inspection technology allows paper manufacturers such as Norske Skog, to produce a high-value product at a more cost-effective rate," said Markku Jaaskelainen, general manager of the Cognex Surface Inspection Systems Division. "By providing 100% quality inspection, SmartView can improve real-time process control and greatly reduce costly reject production."

SmartView is a web-inspection system that is used to automatically detect, identify, and display defects in papers and other materials as they are being produced. Cognex has sold more than 100 SmartView systems since its release in February 2000.
