Remembering Terry Guy

It is with great sadness thatVision Systems Design must report the passing of Mr. Terry Guy, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of Vision Systems Technology, LLC. Terry passed away on March 14th unexpectedly at age 58 at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Patty (Aiello) Guy, his children and a grandson that he called the love of his life. A memorial mass will be held at St. Lawrence Church in Rochester, NY on Friday, March 18th.

As many of us old enough to remember, Terry Guy was an omnipresent member of the machine vision and image processing industry. Armed with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, Terry was well suited to face the sometimes meaningless questions he was asked at tradeshows by those less knowledgeable!

I knew Terry for over 20 years following his path from well-established companies such as Eastman Kodak, Roper Industries, then start-up companies such as Illunis and through to Vision Systems Technology, that he joined with his co-conspirator, Kris Balch.

Only a few months ago, I had the pleasure of dining with Terry in Rochester. Unfortunately, being rather tired, I decided to take a quick nap in the hotel before embarking and I was embarrassingly late for our dinner appointment, much to the chagrin of Judy Leger, my erstwhile companion. Terry, in his usual manner, was not fazed in the slightest.

Over dinner we discussed the usual industry gossip, his family, my family and the future. At one point I remember saying "I’m getting too old for this, roll on my retirement." Terry replied, "Amen to that."

Unfortunately, with his passing, he will never live out those years or spend time with the family that he cared for so much. While he was on this earth, however, the kindness, generosity, knowledge and laughter he imparted on people, such as I, will not be forgotten.
