JULY 29--LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd. (Seoul, South Korea; www.lgphilips-lcd.com) has reached a major milestone with an accumulated production and shipment of 10 million large TFT-LCDs (10 inches and larger) this year, in record time, according to DisplaySearch and other industry analysts. The previous record time for the production and shipment of 10 million large units in the TFT-LCD industry was set last year at 11 months. Breaking this record, LG.Philips LCD hit the 10 million-unit mark in less than seven months this year.

LG.Philips LCD attributes this success to the early ramp up and operation of its two fifth-generation production lines, "P4," which began commercial production in March 2002, and "P5," the first Gen. 5 factory. "P4" came online commercially in May 2003. Through early stabilization of its fifth-generation operations, the company was able to achieve more than 80% production yield rates--signaling the company's manufacturing efficiencies and allowing this shipment and production milestone to set an industry record.
