MAY 21--Preliminary data from Meko (www.meko.co.uk), a market-research consultancy and publisher providing advice and data on European displays, indicates that the European CRT and LCD desktop-monitor market in Q1 2003 showed further consolidation, with the top five players accounting for nearly 50% of sales by volume. According to figures from the company's survey of the market, the volume of monitors shipped during the quarter exceeded 9.6 million units, which represents a significant sequential decline of more than 13% and a year-on-year increase of about 15%.

At the top of the list again is Samsung, which demonstrated year-on-year growth of 24%. The company shipped nearly 1.4 million units in the period, of which nearly 40% were LCD products, compared to about 25% in Q4 2002. This shift toward LCDs is reflected in the figures for the overall market.
