Key Highlights

  • Manufacturers are prioritizing support, scalability, and broad application of AI vision systems over basic feasibility.
  • Sectors like automotive, electronics, and logistics are leading AI adoption due to complex inspection needs.
  • Data-centric workflows lower barriers to trial, enabling quicker deployment and improved product quality.

AI-powered machine vision isn’t in the distant future—it’s being used on some factory floors today. Vision Systems Design recently had the opportunity to speak with Matt Moschner, CEO of Cognex Corporation, a maker of industrial machine vison technology that surveyed more than 500 manufacturers to understand how AI is reshaping machine vision systems in industrial production.

In this first part of our conversation, Moschner shared some valuable insights about the findings, which reveal significant shifts in industry priorities, rapid adoption of AI tools, and changing expectations for quality and scalability.

He said that manufacturers no longer question if AI vision systems will work. The challenge has shifted to: Can the technology be supported, scaled, and broadly applied?

Cognex’s deep investments in AI and strategic acquisitions over the last decade have tapped into a growing customer demand for more powerful and versatile industrial vision tools, Moschner said. The company's vision system workflows are being designed to be more data-centric rather than programmatic, which he says helps lower the barrier to trial, enabling quicker, more confident deployment across production lines.

According to the survey, automotive, electronics, and logistics are all sectors driving these rapid adoptions as they gain the most from AI’s ability to solve complex inspection challenges, improve throughput, and ensure product quality at scale, Moschner said.

Stay tuned for more of VSD’s interview with Moschner later this week.
