Virtual reality system evaluation and demo

Initial tests of the ProFiTex system yielded positive results. The team reconstructed different scenes such as a building entrance, rooms, hallways, and staircases. However, in an environment densely covered in smoke, image reconstruction may not be possible, but if the user were to revert to long-wave infrared imaging, they may be able to retrieve information about structures and people in the building. Team member Hannes Kaufmann says he wants to improve the system by using high-power infrared lasers that will pierce through thick smoke and create a better 3D model, but warns that much research remains to be done, according to a NewScientist article.
