MARCH 25--PPT Vision Inc. (Minneapolis, MN; www.pptvision.com) has received an order worth more than $300,000 for a PPT861-SH 3- and 2-D inspection system from a major US-based semiconductor manufacturer. The system will be used for high-speed scanning and inspection of BGA semiconductor components.

The PPT861-SH is a high-speed inspection system designed specifically for the inspection of semiconductor components in strip form prior to singulation. Handling components in strips, rather than individually, is an increasingly popular approach used to minimize damage to the fragile components as they go through the various packaging and test operations.

Using PPT's patented scanning moiré-interferometry 3-D technology, the system performs 3-D measurements at speeds many times faster than traditional approaches. In addition, the integrated system incorporates high-speed 2-D inspection capability using PPT DSL vision systems. The result is a comprehensive 3- and 2-D inspection of the components while still in a strip form.

The system includes a complete handling solution for the strips, as well as a 2-D matrix-code reader for mapping and reporting inspection results. The company expects to ship this system in its third quarter of FY2002.
