MARCH 22--Visionics Corporation (Minnetonka, MN, and Jersey City, NJ; www.visionics.com) has announced the successful installation of its IBIS mobile identification system at the Hennepin County, MN, Sheriff's Office and the Redlands, CA, Police Department.

The IBIS system uses a hand-held portable device, called a Remote Data Terminal (RDT), which captures photographs, forensic-quality fingerprint images, and magnetic-stripe data. The data are transmitted wirelessly to a laptop in a squad car and to the central IBIS server via the police radio communication system or cellular communications. At the IBIS server, the data are processed and transferred to one or more AFIS databases. If a fingerprint match exists, identification information is transferred back to the RDT. If there is no match, the fingerprint and photo files are discarded from the system.

Dr. Joseph J. Atick, chairman and CEO of Visionics, stated, "We are very encouraged by our continued success in validating and broadening the deployments of IBIS. The immediate results bolster our confidence that this will become an indispensable tool for law enforcement and for other applications where mobile identification is required."
