JUNE 20--RealTime Image (San Bruno, CA; www.RealTimeImage.com), a provider of Internet-based, medical-image-streaming technology, has signed a licensing agreement with ImageStor International (West Berlin, NJ; www.imagestor.com), a shared service provider, for diagnostic image storage. Under this agreement, ImageStor will make available RealTime's iPACS streaming technology for local teleradiology and worldwide image access directly from an ImageStor server.

"Traditionally, teleradiology and image communications over the Internet have meant a trade-off between image quality and the time required to send data-intensive diagnostic images electronically. RealTime offers lossless images and immediate access over existing bandwidths," says Travis Nazi, chief technical officer at ImageStor. "The iPACS technology will allow customers to conduct primary readings at any location with an Internet connection." Nazi notes that the company examined a range of platforms for remote image viewing. "However, iPACS was specifically designed for Internet applications so it is fast, user-friendly, and offers an excellent selection of tools."

ImageStor will offer several iPACS options. The image-streaming platform can be attached directly to the customer's network to enable Web-based image access and teleradiology for locally stored images. Alternatively, when connected to ImageStor's remote server, iPACS will provide a Web viewer with worldwide access to images stored remotely as a fee-per-use service. Images require no time-consuming pre-processing or intermediate storage.

A Web-based DICOM gateway, iPACS technology also addresses a range of needs from integration into OEM products to a Web-server platform with short-term storage for facilities without digital archives, enabling a full digital workflow deployment.
