APRIL 18--Kopin Corporation (Taunton, MA; www.kopin.com) is shipping CyberDisplay 640M imaging systems to Diversified Optical Products Inc. (DIOP; Salem, NH) for two thermal-imaging products: the HH750 Hand-Held Thermal Imager and the TADS 850 Thermal Augmented Day Sight. The HH750 is used by US Border Patrol agents for nighttime surveillance, while the TADS 850 is used by soldiers to enhance target recognition. Both products use 320 x 240 uncooled microbolometer focal-plane arrays (FPAs) in the 8--12-μm spectral range for capturing thermal images. The CyberDisplay 640M is used to convert the output of the FPA to a high-quality image that is displayed to the user.

"The combination of the infrared FPA and CyberDisplay allows the user to turn night into day," said Mike Amorelli, engineering manager for DIOP. "The Kopin imaging system produces high-resolution, high-contrast, video-quality images in an ultralightweight, low-power package. To illustrate that power efficiency, the battery life in these thermal-imaging products has more than doubled since we transitioned from cathode-ray tubes to the Kopin CyberDisplay 640M."
