APRIL 2--Pyramid Vision Technologies (PVT; Princeton, NJ; www.pyramidvision.com), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sarnoff Corporation, has introduced its VideoDetective, a self-contained "forensic workstation" with advanced video-enhancement technology that lets law-enforcement officials and insurance investigators extract clear pictures of surveillance scenes and suspects from poor-quality originals. The hardware-accelerated workstation comes in a convenient carry-case; a software-only version is also available, preinstalled on a standard office PC.

VideoDetective is built around Sarnoff video-processing technologies and was developed in consultation with two federal agencies--the Technology Support Working Group and the Office of National Drug Control Policy--as well as state and local law-enforcement organizations. "When investigators need to make a positive ID of a suspect from a surveillance video, this system makes the job easy," said Deepam Mishra, vice president for marketing of PVT. "VideoDetective can transform a blurry, shaky video into a high-resolution image of a face that officials can print out or share electronically with their officers or other agencies.

"When faced with a poor video of a suspect robbing a convenience store, for example, the best officials can do with other systems is freeze the frames and enlarge the fuzzy images," he says. "VideoDetective is different. It combs through the whole video, grabbing the best information from each frame and re-assembling more complete images in the blink of an eye."

The system also removes shake and vibration in the video caused by camera or subject movement, allowing fast identification of faces, license plate numbers, or other evidence. In addition to these capabilities, VideoDetective incorporates a whole suite of video editing and analysis tools, including video acquisition, playback, editing, and more.
