The joint Electronic Imaging conference between the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and SPIE—which will take place from February 2-6 in San Francisco—is set to focus on current and future imaging applications, including those in healthcare and medicine, space exploration, entertainment, science, and national security.
IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging will feature technical presentations organized into individual conferences on topics in:
- 3D imaging, interaction, and metrology
- Visualization, perception, and color
- Image processing
- Image capture
- Computer vision
- Media processing and communication
- Mobile imaging
In addition, the symposium will feature two plenary talks, the first of which is from Jack Gallant, from the University of California, Berkeley. In his talk, "Using fMRI to reverse engineer the human visual system," Gallant will discuss his laboratory’s data-driven system identification approach toward reverse-engineering the brain’s visual imaging system, with the goal of designing artificial systems with the same capabilities. This framework could form the basis of practical new brain reading technologies, and can inform development of biologically-inspired computer vision systems, according to the program.
The second talk, "Integrated imaging: Creating images from the tight integration of algorithms, computation, and sensors," from Charles Bouman of Purdue University, offers a look into the field of integrated imaging. Bouman will provide examples of innovative integrated imaging systems based on computed tomography, transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron beam imaging, optical sensing, and scanning electron microscopy, and explore their use and potential impact in applications ranging from healthcare to jet engine design.
