In 1907, Henry Round of Marconi Labs discovered electroluminescence, which became the basis for the introduction of solid-state LED lighting. In the mid-1920s, Greg Losey observed light emission from zinc oxide and silicon carbide crystal rectifier diodes when a current was passed through them. Losey’s numerous papers constituted the eventual discovery of what is now known as LEDs.
In 1962,, Dr. Nick Holonyak was experimenting with GaAsP while working at G.E. when he produced the world’s first practical red LED. Then one decade later, Dr. M. George Craford, invented the first yellow LED. Further research and development led to the invention of blue and phosphor-based white LEDs.
